Strategic Goals for the NEPAD Council Global Health Commission (GHC)
Members of the GHC are committed to working towards the following primary strategic goals for global health in Africa:
I. Combating disease in Africa
- engaging with members of parliament on policy matters concerning the diseases identified within the GHC HDP Framework
- facilitating the successful delivery and evaluation of PHC models and integration of eHealth within health services
- collaborating with health programmes that address diseases identified within the GHC HDP Framework, e.g. the WHO programmes for MDG diseases and Neglected Tropical Diseases
- encouraging cross sector partnerships between health services, pharmaceutical companies, as well as education and research institutions
II. Promoting oral health in Africa
- engaging at policy level on matters concerning oral health
- advocacy and consultancy on oral health promotion and access for the poor
- collaborating with programmes concerned with oral health in Africa (including the WHO programme for Oral Health)
- encouraging private and public sector partnerships and investment on oral health integration
III. Empowering Africa’s health workforce
- promoting favourable policies for health systems strengthening and workforce development
- advocacy, consultancy and facilitation on meeting the needs for human resources for health (HRH) across Africa
- supporting initiatives and programmes for HRH (such as the World Health Alliance)
- encouraging partnerships at global level to support training, development and funding of the health workforce
IV. Supporting a sustainable environment for better health
- engaging with members of parliament on the adoption of appropriate environmental policies (e.g. climate change adaptation and mitigation)
- advocacy, consultancy and facilitation on climate change, sustainable technologies and best practice- in relation to food production, clean water and energy
- collaborating with various programmes (including United Nations) on climate change, energy, food, clean water and sanitation
- encouraging global collaboration between research institutions, local and central government, private sector, civil society and local communities
V. Improving access to appropriate medicines and medical technologies
- engaging at policy level on low cost access to quality assured medicines and medical technologies, including eHealth, mHealth, Telemedicine, medical devices.
- advocacy for local industry (including research, development, standards, production and distribution), improved access and pro-poor distribution of essential medicines
- supporting and collaborating with programmes for appropriate medical technologies (including the WHO programme for essential medicines)
- encouraging global partnerships for appropriate medicines and medical technologies for Africa
